Hagstone - a novel

Frida Wells, a young Jewish woman profoundly damaged from her experiences in The Netherlands during World War Two accepts a teaching post at a new Suffolk boarding school, Westlewich Hall. There she meets Guy Grafton, a badly wounded pilot and last of the Graftons who owned the Hall before it became a school in 1946. As her feelings for him grow she finds herself drawn deeper into a mystery centred around the shadowy presence of Hester Thorndike, the forgotten first wife of Guy’s great grandfather Algernon Grafton, who died in 1848. Hester died while giving birth to a child Algernon believed was not his own, the child died as well. Hester has now seemingly been awakened by Frida’s presence at the Hall, or at least Frida believes she has. Frida attempts to unravel this mystery in the distant past while at the same time confronting demons of her own.
